The Central Market 中央艺术坊 is located on Jalan Hang Kasturi, just a stone away from Chinatown on Petaling Street. It was founded in 1888 and was originally used as a wet market, while the current building was completed in 1937. It has since been classified as a Heritage Site by the Malaysian Heritage Society and it is now a landmark for Malaysian culture and heritage.

This building was built by the British who were ruling Malaya at that time and it was used as a wet market for Kuala Lumpur folks and tin miners. It was very convenient to the early city dwellers because it was within the vicinity of Klang bus stand, the hub of feeder bus service for Kuala Lumpur and the train station.

Further expansions were made in 1889, 1895, 1920 and 1921. By 1933, the expansions to the warehouse turned the market now to its present size.Hence, in the early 1980s, it was renovated and reopened for use in year 1986. Instead of being used as a wet market, it has since then became a leading arts and crafts centre in the city.

Today is the nineteenth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It signified the day when Guan Yin Boddhisattva left her home for the monastery as her first path to enlightenment.

On such an auspicious day as today, my husband and I, like thousands of Guan Yin’s devotees, made our way to the nearest Guan Yin’s temple in town centre, namely the Wei Zhen Gong Guan Yin Temple at Jalan Maharajalela, a short distance from the monorail stop and a walking distance from our home in Pudu.

It was our first visit to this charming and beautiful temple which was actually located on a hill overlooking the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall. From the temple’s ground, you could get a panoramic view of busy Jalan Maharajalela.

After paying our homage to the deities inside the temple, we decided to have vegetarian lunch at the canteen located just beside the temple. It was a spacious and windy place. On a long table there laid trays and trays of vegetarian foods served by a few volunteers who were doing it on voluntary basis.

We were enjoying our food and the scenery when I overheard a conversation between an elderly couple that sat next to us at the same table.

The man was grumbling to the lady, “That fat woman who served rice had a bad attitude.”

His partner chipped in, “Yes, I think she was very stingy in distributing the food away.”

“Why they are so stingy, the food does not belonged to them privately, but to the public who donated it to the temple?” she continued.

“The fat woman who served rice to me said ‘enough’ when I needed more as I was really hungry. This is not the first time she acted this way,” the man purposely complained loudly, hoping that fat woman could hear what he was complaining about.

“It is only fair to let everyone have enough to eat to fill up their stomachs,” the lady answered.

“Those volunteers are actually creating some bad Karma for themselves. Instead of being rewarded for their kind work, they are actually creating negative vibes for themselves,” he opined.

“If my stomach is full and I cannot take in anymore, I will reject any surplus, even if they serve me dragon meats!” he said sarcastically.

“If they are more generous with the foods, it is better than them reciting prayers!” he ended his complain bitterly.

Although I do not know them at all, I think they got a point. I cannot help but to agree with them both. I believed it is always more blessed to give, especially when it comes to food, for food is a blessing. It is always good to give food to needy people. You give blessing to others and you will receive manifold blessings in return.

Simply, in Buddhism, the more you give, the more you are blessed. And what is more blessed than to relieve the hunger of those in need of some food to fill up their gnawing stomachs?

It is a pity this bunch of volunteers does not practice the basic of Buddha’s teaching, and that is compassion to other’s needs.

Apples ~ Belief, Discovery and Greatness !

There are three famous “Apples”.

Guess what ?

Adam and Eve and their apple. They were forbade to eat the Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden. It was guarded by an evil serpent which enticed them to do so. Eve gave way to temptation and urged Adam to get it for her. He did. Each took a bite of the tasty fruit. A chunk of it got struck in his throat.  All my life I have heard the same explanation why the “Adam’s apple” is called that. This was the first apple !

Newton and his apple. Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that every point mass in the universe attracts every other point mass with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. His finding was related to an apple which drop from a tree. This was the second apple !

Steve Jobs and his Apple. Steven P. Jobs, the Apple Inc. chairman and co-founder who pioneered the personal-computer industry and changed the way people think about technology. He was an American inventor and entrepreneur . Well, this was the third apple !

Amazing , wonderful and so extraordinary isn’t it ?!

I woke up as usual at 8 a.m. that morning. I felt very fresh and happy. I felt very good. Somehow I felt something special will happen on that day and my spirits soared high.

I brushed my teeth and washed my face. Put on some make-up and then a pretty dress before giving my hair a good brush. After putting on my shoes and grabbing my bag, it was time to go to the office.

Somehow that morning all my lunch mates deserted me. One had to replace the cashier while others had other appointments. Even the tea lady was not around to pack lunch for me. So I was left without any choice but to pack my lunch on my own.

At 1p.m. I went to Lai Foong Restaurant opposite Bangunan Hong Leong to buy wanton mee and pig stomach black pepper soup. The wanton mee hawker was very busy at that moment and I told him what I wanted. He glared at me and told me to come back later. We exchanged some jokes and then I made my way to pack coconut juice in front of another restaurant that lies back to back with Lai Foong Restaurant.

On the way, my eyes caught someone familiar. He had the kindest and most honest face I ever met before. I felt I had met him somewhere although I could not instantly recall where. I gave him a warm smile. It was a continuation from the smile which I have given to the wanton mee hawker a few minutes before.

He was flanked by his two female colleagues and they were on their way to Lai Foong Restaurant for lunch. He was looking at me before they disappeared into the restaurant and was lost in the crowd. Me? I walked on to get my coconut juice.

When I came back with the coconut juice in my hands, I went back to the wanton mee stall to collect my order. I stood there to wait for my food and I turned my head to look in at the lunch crowd. To my astonishment and delight, my eyes spotted that same guy again. He saw me too and immediately sprang on his feet before hurriedly came forward.

“Miss, where had I met you before as I felt you looked familiar?” he asked smilingly.

“I think it was at Steps Dancing Studio,” I replied hesitatingly.

“Oh yes, Steps Dancing Studio, no wonder you looked familiar,” he said and began to dig into his pocket.

“Here is my name card and I worked in Marco Polo Holidays. I am a tour guide, and be free to drop by for some enquiries,” he said excitedly.

I took his name card and said, “I don’t think I have any money to go for trips abroad.”

“Never mind, we can be friends then. Where did you work?” he asked further.

“Hong Leong Property Management,” I replied.

“Give me a call when you are free and we can go for lunch together,” he offered amicably.

I just nodded and took his card before leaving the place. Little did I know he is more than a friend. I just put his name card in my planner and ate my food. But I had forgotten about it after coming out from the pantry. It was left there for a few days……..

That was almost twenty years ago…………
